Non lock up 3000 stall convertor?

I just jad a chevy 350ci engine built with 500hp and was told that the trans could only handle it ( because of the cam ) if I had a non-lock up 3000 stall convetor. Could it for daily driving. I once had a 86 firebird with 420hp but the cam was mild and did not need any stall convertors and it ran great for years so I have no experience in stall convetors. I heard the car launches like a "rocket".
