Claiming social security benefits?

I have been diagnosed with a crippling disorder and haven't been able to work in over a year. I couldn't claim unemployment before because I was self employed. Because I now have this diagnosis and am fully dependent upon my parents for my financial needs, can I claim long term disability benefits through social security? All of the sites I have visited talk about work related disability, in other words claiming disability from the employer's insurance.
